Client notes
What investors and advisers say about working through small-cap momentum maps with our desk.
These notes come from recent engagements. Names are used with permission; firm affiliations are generalised where requested.
“The relative-strength table made the conversation shorter in a good way. We stopped debating anecdotes and started ranking what still had volume behind it.”
“They caught the rotation into UK industrials two weeks before our committee met. The briefing named three names we already held and one we had missed — the missed one mattered.”
“The session ran long because we kept asking follow-ups, and they still delivered the written note the same evening. I would have preferred a tighter shortlist, but the ranking logic was transparent.”
“Ahead of results season they flagged a support-services name we had underweighted. The mid-season update then explained why the post-print fade looked orderly rather than broken. That distinction saved us from an unnecessary exit.”
Engagement story: AIM industrials shortlist
A Leeds-based discretionary desk asked for a Momentum Mapping Review limited to AIM industrials with average daily value above £400k. Liquidity filters cut the starting list sharply. Relative strength against both the sector peer set and the FTSE Small Cap benchmark left eight names; volume confirmation dropped two more.
The walkthrough spent most of its time on a single mid-ranked name where the catalyst calendar showed a refinancing window overlapping a soft relative-strength slope. The client kept the position but sized it down before the event. Two weeks later the print was clean, yet the stock chopped sideways — the sizing decision mattered more than a binary call.
Engagement story: earnings watch for a private book
A private investor in Edinburgh commissioned an Earnings Season Watch across a mixed AIM and Main Market small-cap book. The pre-season note highlighted three prints where momentum was already extended. After two of those prints, strength held; the third faded on light volume. The mid-season update documented that fade without drama, and the client used it as a checklist item rather than a surprise.
