Where we look

Coverage universe

How we define the small-cap universe we map — exchanges, liquidity floors, and sector breadth.

What “coverage” means here

Coverage is the set of smaller listed companies we are prepared to rank for relative strength, volume confirmation, and catalyst timing. It is not a recommendation list. Names enter and leave as liquidity, corporate actions, and free-float quality change.

Exchange focus

We primarily map:

  • UK Main Market small-caps and mid-small crossover names
  • AIM companies meeting our liquidity floor
  • Selected European small-caps where sterling investors commonly hold dual or cross-listed exposure

Large-cap index constituents are out of scope unless they appear only as a benchmark reference.

Liquidity and float filters

Before ranking, we apply practical filters so the shortlist remains tradable for the client’s mandate:

  • Average daily value thresholds agreed at intake (often £250k–£1m depending on book size)
  • Free-float quality checks where disclosed data allows
  • Exclusion of names in prolonged corporate event limbo when price discovery is unreliable

Industrials & support services

Order books, backlog commentary, and margin inflection often drive momentum shifts we track closely.

Consumer & retail

Same-store narratives and inventory cycles matter; we weight volume confirmation heavily in thinner names.

Resources & energy services

Commodity beta is acknowledged, then set aside so idiosyncratic momentum can still be ranked.

Healthcare & tech-adjacent small-caps

Catalyst calendars (trials, contract awards) sit beside price behaviour — neither alone decides the shortlist.

How coverage feeds an engagement

When you book a Momentum Mapping Review, we start from this universe, then tighten to your mandate. If your list sits outside our usual filters, we say so at intake rather than stretch the method.
